Newsreader Huw Edwards has resigned and left the BBC, the corporation has confirmed.
The famous anchorman has stepped down on medical grounds after doctors advised him to bring the curtain down on 40 years of service.
The 62-year-old BBC News presenter was among the highest paid journalists there with a salary of between £435,000 and £440,000 a year.
However, Edwards was suspended by the BBC in July 2023, following claims he paid thousands of pounds for sexually explicit images.
Police found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by the presenter.
Edwards' identity was initially concealed in the early stages of the investigation back in July, however, his wife Vicky Flind named him as the suspended star and revealed he was in hospital receiving treatment for his mental health.
He has since faced further allegations of "inappropriate behaviour".
A BBC spokesperson said: "Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC. After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors.
"The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don't believe it appropriate to comment further."
