A new poll published ahead of the Greater Manchester mayoral election next week suggests we could be in store for a surprise. Labour's Andy Burnham, who has served as the city-region's mayor since 2017, is expected to cruise towards a third term in office.
But the battle for second place looks set to throw up some surprising results. The poll by More in Common predicts that Conservative candidate Laura Evans will finish in fourth place, three percentage points behind ex-Tory Dan Barker who has defected to Reform UK.
Independent candidate Nick Buckley, who stood for Reform at the last mayoral election in 2021, is also polling at nine per cent - the same level as the Tories - but is predicted to come third. The Liberal Democats and Green candidates are both polling at 4 per cent.

Mr Burnham secured a second term in office three years ago by winning two-thirds of the vote. Mrs Evans, who was the Conservative candidate in the 2021 election too, won less than 20 per cent of the vote with all seven other candidates securing less than 5 per cent.
According to More in Common, Mr Burnham currently has an approval rating of 31 per cent - higher than most national politicians. The pollsters predict that the Greater Manchester mayor will win by a slightly smaller margin at this election, putting him on 63 per cent.
Through polling and focus groups, the organisation found that those who voted Conservative in 2019 are more likely to vote Labour than for the Tories this time. A third said they intend to back Mr Burnham compared to 27 per cent who would vote for Mrs Evans.
