If you’re looking for a fabulous new show to enjoy this summer, you’re in luck! A fresh spin on the well-known The Parent Trap story, Identical is the twin-sational new production coming to Manchester this month - and it’s a musical!
Based on the beloved novel by Erich Kästner that inspired two hugely successful Disney movies starring Hayley Mills in 1961 and Lindsay Lohan in 1998, Identical tells the story of twin girls who were separated at birth and are reunited by chance at a summer camp 10 years later. To get to know their parents and reconcile the two halves of their family, they decide to swap places and live each other’s lives.
After nine years in the making, the brand new show opened to rave reviews in Nottingham earlier this summer and is now heading to The Lowry in Salford for two weeks only - from Friday, August 19 to Saturday, September 3, 2022.
Destined for the West End, Identical is produced by Kenny Wax, who is behind highly-rated shows such as Six, The Play That Goes Wrong and Top Hat; directed by Olivier and Tony award-winning Trevor Nunn; with music and lyrics by the multi-award-winning writers George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
Uniquely, as its title suggests, the show features three sets of real-life, identical twins in the lead roles of Lisa and Lottie, who are among the “sparkling performances”, as described by Broadway World in its recent four-star review.
Ahead of Identical’s opening at The Lowry on August 19, we spoke to producer Kenny Wax about the enduring story, the origins of the book, as well as what audiences can expect from the new musical production.
