Mindy Kaling’s “Never Have I Ever” is making a star out of a Mississaugu, Ont. native.
The show focuses on a “modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl” dealing with everyday life from her parents to school.
Loosely based on Kaling’s own adolescence, “Never Have I Ever” stars Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi, “an overachieving high school sophomore who has a short fuse that gets her into difficult situations.”

The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival on Thursday awarded its best international feature film prize to Stray, an American film from director Elizabeth Lo about stray dogs in Istanbul that debuted at Tribeca. The fest also gave a special jury prize in the international feature doc competition to Rodrigo Reyes' 499, a U.S.-Mexico co-production about the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire.
