David Cronenberg Breaks Down Cannes Walkouts, His New Film’s Sexuality, and Why Netflix Turns Him Down

Elsa Keslassy International CorrespondentEight years after “Maps to the Stars,” David Cronenberg is coming back to the Cannes Film Festival with what looks to be a big bang. Weaving together equal parts body horror and dystopian panache, “Crimes of the Future” instantly became one of the most buzzed-about competition films after Neon dropped the trailer on April 14, the day of Cannes’ press conference. The lushly-lensed film, which reunites Cronenberg with his muse Viggo Mortensen (“A History of Violence,” “Eastern Promises”) along with Kristen Stewart and Lea Seydoux, could prove as divisive as the Canadian master’s 1996 cult film “Crash” which went on to scoop Cannes’ very first Special Jury Prize for “its audacity, daring and originality.” Ahead of the start of the festival, Cronenberg sat down with Variety in Paris to talk about the long-gestating “Crimes of the Future,” the making of the picture, its underlying themes, while speaking candidly about the difficulty of financing challenging films, as well as his stance on streamers and  U.S.

David Bowie tribute show to be held in UK’s largest planetarium

David Bowie will be honoured with a new stage performance at the National Space Centre, with four shows slated to go down later this month. The show, titled Bowie: Oddity To Mars, features a live performance from the five-piece tribute band David Live – named for Bowie’s 1974 live album – alongside projections of footage provided by NASA, and an additional visual element developed by the Space Centre’s own in-house team.NASA’s footage, which will be delivered in the show as a 360-degree projection, was shot during the journey of Apollo 17 – the Apollo program’s final mission to Mars in 1972. The show itself will celebrate the same stretch of Bowie’s career that the Apollo program ran for, beginning with 1969’s self-titled record and ending with ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars’ (which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year). The show will take place in the Space Centre’s Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium – the largest of its ilk in the UK – on Friday May 20 and Saturday 21.

Spider-Man and Black Adam may get the headlines, CinemaCon continued its efforts to highlight all forms of movies with Tuesday’s presentation by indie distributor Neon, whose team led by distribution chief Elissa Federoff showcased a pair of films that defined the phrase “shock and awe.”On the “shock” side was “Crimes of the Future,” a disturbing return by “Videodrome” filmmaker David Cronenberg to the body horror genre that he is considered to be the master of. Cronenberg himself appeared on the CinemaCon stage to present what he jokingly called the start of his “attack on the world.”Starring Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart, and Lea Seydoux, the provocative film takes place in a distant future where environmental degradation has begun to affect human evolution, causing the body to grow extra organs.
