Neil Morrissey will host his 60th birthday bash at the pub he owns surrounded by his celebrity pals. But it's a far cry from his troubled childhood growing up in care in Stoke-on-Trent. The Line of Duty actor's humble beginnings start in Stafford.
Sadly, he spent most of his childhood in care, including a six-year stint at Penkhull Children's Home from 1974. His life changed for good when he discovered a love for acting at Thistley Hough High School and his acting credits now include Bob the Builder, Line of Duty and The Good Karma Hospital, Death In Paradise and Unforgotten. A solution was found through the family of his friend, Mark Langston, who fostered Neil until the summer of his 18th birthday. He would go on to perform at Stoke Schools Theatre, Stoke Repertory Theatre and Stoke Original Theatre. Such was his talent, his application to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama resulted in an unconditional offer.
He shot to fame in the mid-1980s as dim biker Rocky in the ITV drama series Boon before securing the role of Tony in popular sitcom Men Behaving Badly. Here in North Staffordshire he is also well-known as the man behind the Plume of Feathers in Barlaston where his birthday celebrations will take place. The actor has previously opened up about the challenges he faced coming from a working-class background.
