‘NCIS’ Prequel Series Casts Mariel Molino

Where will Francis Ford Coppola‘s “Megalopolis” have its world premiere, and who will distribute it in theaters later this year? Those are just two of several questions swirling around the director’s self-financed epic, a project over two decades in the making. After last night, those questions are one step closer to having answers.

EXCLUSIVE: Some 20 years after it was took root in the imagination of Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis screened this morning for the very first time. Held at the Universal CityWalk IMAX Theater, the epic film screened for buyers, and had every distributor in attendance. Also in tow were family friends and filmmakers, a list included Angelica Huston, Nicolas Cage, Andy Garcia, Spike Jonze, Al Pacino, Jon Favreau, Colleen Camp, Roger Corman, Darren Aronofsky, Cailee Spaeny and cast members Shia LaBeouf and Talia Shire.

Jaden Thompson “NCIS: Origins” has added Kyle Schmid to the cast, joining previously announced cast members Austin Stowell and Mariel Molina. The upcoming drama series, scheduled for the 2024-25 season, serves as a prequel to CBS‘ long-running military procedural “NCIS.” Schmid will play special agent Mike Franks, who was originally played by Muse Watson in “NCIS.” The character is described as “a proud Texan who all but showers in his cowboy boots and sports a perfectly coiffed mustache that’s as thick as his skin.

CBS‘ NCIS: Origins has found its young Mike Franks. Kyle Schmid has been cast as a lead opposite Austin Stowell and Mariel Molino in the CBS Studios-produced Young Gibbs drama, a prequel to the venerable procedural, which has a straight-to-series order for the 2024-2025 broadcast season.

Francis Ford Coppola kicked off 2024 by confirming that his self-financed magnum opus “Megalopolis” will reach audiences this year. “It’s only going to be a few months and it’ll be out,” Coppola said in January.

The nine-episode series by Kentridge – who is celebrated around the world for his influential works comprising animation, installations, theater, opera and films – first previewed as a rough cut at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival.

Randall Park (“Always Be My Maybe,” “Fresh Off the Boat”), Yvette Nicole Brown (“Community,” “The Odd Couple”, Elijah Wood (“The Lords of the Rings” trilogy, “Wilford”), and Ashley Johnson (“The Last of Us,” “Blindspot”) will all lend their voices to the animated adaptation of the popular mobile game. Variety exclusively reported the series was in development back in June 2023.

EXCLUSIVE: Production has begun on the new Netflix series The Gringo Hunters in Mexico City and the core cast has been revealed. They include José María Yazpik (Narcos, Madame Web), Sebastian Roché (1923, The Young Pope), Harold Torres (ZeroZeroZero, El Chapo) and Mayra Hermosillo (Narcos: Mexico, Thursday’s Widows). Plans to shoot in Tijuana are also in place.
