A brave young mum has opened up on the heartbreak of having to terminate her pregnancy after discovering her ‘beautiful’ baby girl had multiple medical complications.
Demi Moores, 18, and her fiancée Luke Lawrence, 20, were ‘over the moon’ when they found out they were expecting their first child in November last year.
The excited couple who live together in Westhoughton, Bolton named their baby girl Mylah Mae and began decorating her nursery in preparation for her arrival. Heartbreakingly the pair never got the chance to take their baby home.
Last Monday (March 25) Demi and Luke attended a routine 20-week scan at Bolton Hospital which revealed something wasn’t right. They were referred to Saint Mary’s Hospital in Manchester and it was there that the tragic discovery was made that their unborn baby had Spina Bifida along with several other medical conditions.
Describing the devastating moment they were told the news, Demi said: “We thought everything was perfectly fine. I could feel her kicking. We thought nothing was wrong.
“They said she had Spina Bifida and it was major, her spine wasn’t forming and the cord on her spine was pulling on her brain which was making it enlarged. She had a cyst on her left kidney and due to me having low amniotic fluid her lungs weren’t forming properly.
“They told us it would be impossible for her to survive and that it was best for us to terminate the pregnancy so she wouldn’t be in any more pain. We were devastated.”
Demi was induced two days later and gave birth to Mylah, who weighed just over 320 grams, at Bolton Hospital at 3.40am on Saturday (March 30). Little Mylah survived for just over an hour and sadly died shortly after 5am.
