Could Mediocre Movies Save Movie Theaters? ‘Ticket to Paradise,’ ‘A Man Called Otto’ and ‘80 for Brady’ Say Yes

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Quick, what do the following movies have in common? The cheesy middle-aged rom-com “Ticket to Paradise,” the curmudgeon-finds-his-heart-of-gold drama “A Man Called Otto,” and “80 for Brady,” a road comedy about four octogenarians girl-tripping their way to the 2017 Super Bowl. All three are built around those once larger-than-life entities known as movie stars (Julia Roberts and George Clooney in “Paradise”; Tom Hanks in “Otto”; Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Lily Tomlin and Rita Moreno in “Brady”). All three are solid mid-level hits at the domestic box office (“Ticket to Paradise” made $68 million, “A Man Called Otto” has grossed $60 million and “80 for Brady” is chugging its way to the $50 million yard line). That’s a fact that many have taken note of at a time when the most savory offerings of the awards season (“Tár,” “The Fablemans,” “The Banshees of Inisherin”) starkly underperformed at the box office.

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor In 2018, when industry vet David Massey was leaving his post at the helm of Island Records and returning to his longtime home at Sony Music, he originally was going to give his label a new name — possibly Work of Art, the name of the Sony-affiliated publishing and management company he also heads up. But when the possibility arose of relaunching Arista — the label founded by Clive Davis in 1974, now owned by Sony, which famously had a roster that ranged from Barry Manilow and Whitney Houston to Patti Smith — he changed his mind. “A friend had said to me, ‘Your Island is almost like the new Arista,’ which I took as a real compliment, because they had that incredibly eclectic, colorful, vibrant roster, and yet they were smaller and contained and could focus very intensely. We asked Clive and he was up for it, and it was simple as that.”

Gus Kenworthy says Gay Kiss Removed from “80 for Brady”

80 for Brady, which opened last week in theaters nationwide. The film is inspired by a true story of four octogenarian female football fans who travel to Houston for the 2017 Super Bowl to watch the New England Patriots play against the Atlanta Falcons.Since the film’s release, some critics have argued the film should have distinct appeal for LGBTQ viewers, primarily due to its quartet of leading ladies who are much beloved by the queer community — Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field — and the inclusion of Billy Porter, who plays a halftime show choreographer.Gus Kenworthy, who makes a cameo in the 98-minute film, says that initially the script called for a shot of him “making out” with his on-screen boyfriend, portrayed by M3GAN actor Brian Jordan Alvarez. The kiss was subsequently cut from the film. The 31-year-old actor said he and Alvarez performed several takes of the kiss, which occur after the pair engage in a back-and-forth lover’s spat. “They used the script for one take, but then we did it like four or five times where we would just ad-lib insults at each other and then make out,” Kenworthy told Variety. “Some of them got raunchy.”He said he hopes at least one of the deleted kisses makes it into the director’s cut.“Release the tapes!” he joked.
