If you gifted your mum tulips for Mother's Day, you might want to share this clever tip with her. It could make the flowers last up to two weeks! Some folks aren't fans of giving flowers because they wilt quickly.
But experts say there's a simple trick to make your tulips last much longer - and you probably already have what you need in your kitchen.
Tulips are a popular choice for Mother's Day gifts since the holiday falls right at the start of their blooming season. Alex Biggart, Brand Manager at 123 Flowers, shared his advice on how to keep tulips looking fresh.
He called them a "go-to for Mother's Day" because they "bring a pop of colour into the home and are bound to make anyone smile." He said his "tips and tricks should make tulips last for a couple of weeks after Mother's Day" - perfect! Alex's first tip involves a toothpick and only takes a few seconds. Speaking to The Mirror, he suggested making "a small hole underneath the flower head", which "allows air to escape when the flower drinks water so they don't droop over at the top." When it comes to caring for your tulips, Alex suggests changing the water "every two to three days".
To give your flowers a bit of a boost, he recommends adding ice cubes and a teaspoon of sugar to the water, as it provides much-needed nutrients Also, for future reference, when choosing your bunch make sure all your tulips are closed to ensure you have them for longer.
Before you pop your tulips in water, Alex advises using a knife to cut the stems at a 45-degree angle.
This helps the flowers absorb more water. "You should also remove any leaves below the water line as these will die and cause bacteria to build up," Alex added.
