‘Minari’ Writer-Director Lee Isaac Chung Praises His Crew: ‘This Film Wouldn’t Have Been Possible Without Them’

The Hollywood Reporter’s Mia Galuppo sat down with director Lee Isaac Chung, editor Harry Yoon and composer Emile Mosseri to discuss their A24 film,Minari, in aTHRPresents Q&A powered by Vision Media. Mosseri was brought in by producer Christina Oh, the two having worked together on The Last Black Man in San Francisco.

For the second year in a row, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has given its Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film to a movie (predominantly) in Korean. However, the twist this time around is that 2021 winner Minari is a wholly U.S. production (as opposed to last year’s laureate Parasite).

Schitt’s Creek continued its winning streak Sunday night at the 78th Golden Globes, picking up the statuette for Best TV Comedy series. It was the second win of the night for the hit Pop TV show. Catherine O’Hara earlier took the nod for Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy. The show also was nominated in the acting categories for series co-creators and stars Dan Levy and Eugene Levy and Annie Murphy.

UTA has signed writer-director Dylan Meyer. Meyer has become an increasingly in-demand screenwriter.

The Haunting of Alma Fielding, Kate Summerscale’s Baillie Gifford Prize-shortlisted novel, is to be adapted for television by New Pictures with writer Charlotte Stoudt (Fosse/Verdon) and director Minkie Spiro (The Plot Against America, Fosse/Verdon). Stoudt and Spiro are currently working together on an eight-part psychological thriller, Pieces of Her: an adaptation of the New York Times bestseller for Netflix, starring Toni Collette.

Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” follows a family of Korean-American immigrants who try to reboot their lives on a farm in 1980s Arkansas. The semi-autobiographical drama finds Steven Yeun essentially playing Chung’s father.

“ Minari ” could not be more personal. Filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung based the film on his own childhood in the 1980s, when his Korean American parents moved to Arkansas to start a farm.
