Miley Cyrus dedicated her new song to the late Sinéad O'Connor after the Irish singer's open letter to the former Disney actress went viral following her death.
The former Hannah Montana star, 30, introduced her new single Used To Be Young on the Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions) on Thursday night. The Party In The USA hitmaker revisited key moments across her career and touched on her dad Billy Ray Cyrus musical success as a country artist.
Miley told viewers: "Over my short lifetime and my long career, I have expressed myself in a lot of different and unique ways. But one thing that has always stayed consistent is honest storytelling. I'm deeply grateful and appreciative of anyone that takes time to listen to my new song."
Reflecting on key moments across her career, Miley touched on the backlash she faced when trying to break out of her Disney image in 2013, including the open letter she received from Sinead.
"So at the time when I made Wrecking Ball, I was expecting for there to be controversy and backlash, but I don't think I expected other women to put me down or turn on me, especially women that had been in my position before.
"So this is when I had received an open letter from Sinéad O'Connor, and I had no idea about the fragile mental state that she was in. And I was also only 20. So I could really only wrap my head around mental illness so much. And all that I saw was that another woman had told me that this idea was not my idea.
"And even if I was convinced that it was, it was still just, you know, men in power's idea of me. And they had manipulated me to believe that it was my own idea when it never really was. And it was. And it is. And I still love it."
