A Masters student threw a flare during a match at Old Trafford and injured a disabled woman. Leicester City supporter Amar Raithatha, 26, ignited the blue smoke flare and launched it towards the lower tier area after they scored against Manchester United in April this year.
The flare fell and landed near to the feet of a 69-year-old woman who was sitting in the disabled section of the lower tier. The woman was ‘engulfed’ in blue smoke which caused her eyes to sting.
Manchester Magistrates Court heard that she used water to ‘clean’ her eyes before going for first aid attention. Fortunately she suffered no serious injuries.

Raithatha, of Whetstone, Leicester, pleaded guilty to offences of common assault, possessing a flare at a sporting event and throwing a missile. He will be sentenced later this month following the preparation of presentence reports.
Laura Atherton, prosecuting, told the court that on April 2 this year Man United played Leicester City at a match which carried a ‘medium risk to public safety’. She said Raithatha had travelled to Old Trafford to watch the match and was seated 20 rows from the front of the lower tier.
“During the second half, Leicester City scored a goal which put them in the lead,” Ms Atherton said. “The defendant had with him a smoke flare. He ignited it and threw it towards the lower tier area and near to the disabled supporters.”
