Brent Lang Executive Editor of Film and MediaMartin McDonagh has a profound feeling of déjà vu these days. The last time he was in New York, McDonagh was in the thick of Broadway previews for “Hangmen,” his criminally funny look at an executioner-turned-pub owner forced to grapple with his past when capital punishment is made illegal in the U.K. The play was scheduled to open on March 19, 2020, but COVID upended those plans and those of so many other productions, shutting down Broadway for two years. Now, McDonagh is back and remounting the show that was snuffed out before it ever really had a chance, and it’s making him feel a little out of place.“It’s almost like these two years didn’t happen,” he says.
“I’m in the same apartment, doing the same play, walking by the same bodega each morning on the way to rehearsal.” And he’s talking to one of the same reporters who interviewed him prior to Broadway’s shutdown. At the time, McDonagh, the creator of hit plays like “The Pillowman” and films like “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” was depressed about the state of the theater business. But absence, as you’ll soon see, has made the heart grow fonder. Some shows suspended their runs in the wake of COVID, but “Hangmen” said it was closing. Why?The producers could see that things weren’t going to improve anytime in the near future.
They knew even if things did open back up, it would be hard to get an audience back in theaters. But as things improved, the producers got more confident. They knew it was a good show. When we first spoke, you were critical of the commercialization of the theater industry. Have your views changed? At the time, I was decrying what was happening in London, where there were a lot of plays made

Homes Under the Hammer presenter Martin Roberts, 58, has admitted he is "scared and emotionally battered" after being rushed into hospital for emergency heart surgery this week, saying that he would have had “hours to live” had he not undergone the procedure. In a candid video from his hospital room on Thursday, Martin revealed to his 20.3k Instagram followers that he had undergone the surgery after doctors found a “massive amount of fluid” all around his heart. The clip started with the theme tune to his show Homes Under the Hammer playing in the background before panning to an understandably tired-looking Martin who said: “Well, I have to say… this isn’t where I expected to be watching Homes Under the Hammer today, “A bit of good news, and a bit of bad news.
Marilyn Stasio Theater CriticIn the theatrical annals of wild and wicked stage plays, there are black comedies, blacker comedies, and blacker-than-the-dead-of-night comedies like “Hangmen.“ Prolific playwright Martin McDonagh hasn’t written all of them, to be sure; but he’s created some of the best of this deadly lot, including “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” “The Cripple of Inishmaan” and “The Pillowman,” not to mention such beautifully bleak films as “Seven Psychopaths,” “In Bruges” and “Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.”Still, there is something special about “Hangmen,” which, were it a song, would be the perfect little ditty to play as you were cutting your wrists. Happily (if such a word would apply to any of his work), this Broadway production is a deadly beauty, flawlessly cast and directed in the mordant style of an executioner’s song by Matthew Dunster.
Sneaky, menacing and funny are descriptions that come up more than once in Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen, but not one of the three words quite does justice to this irresistibly pitch-black comedy, opening tonight at the Golden Theatre on Broadway.
