Mancunian Way speed limit reduced after huge number of crashes, one of them fatal

The speed limit on the Mancunian Way will be reduced to 30mph following a series of crashes, one of them fatal.

The new limit will be introduced on the city centre road from 9pm today (Monday).

It follows analysis by highways official which show there have been 29 crashes on the road since 2018.

One of them was fatal. Nadia Yusuf, 17, from Moss Side, was a front seat passenger in a Mercedes when it struck a railway bridge on the Mancunian Way at 11.45pm on January 10 this year.

The driver, 23, and another passenger, 18, were also hurt.

Today (Monday), the council announced that a temporary 30mph speed limit will be in force from 9pm tonight between Chester Road to the Pin Mill Brow junction for at least 18 months. It may become permanent.

The old speed limit was 50mph for much of the road.

Because of recent collisions the crash barriers along the Mancunian Way have been damaged and the road will be closed over the weekend of March 12 and 13 for repairs to be carried out.

Councillor Emma Taylor, assistant executive member for transport at the town hall, said: "Our priority will always be road safety and what has become all too clear in recent years is that the Mancunian Way is a particularly hazardous stretch of road.

"I would ask motorists to please respect the new speed limit while it is in force and give themselves more time to complete journeys where necessary, especially during busier periods.

"The Mancunian Way will also be closed in March (12/13) for its annual maintenance and inspection weekend, which will allow us to undertake any necessary repairs in a safe and controlled way."
