Man in 30s arrested on suspicion of murder following fatal town centre stabbing

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder by police investigating the fatal stabbing of a man in his 40s. Emergency services rushed to Oldham town centre in the early hours of Saturday following reports of a man with suspected knife wounds.
At around 4.20am earlier today (Saturday), police were called to Union Street by North West Ambulance Service paramedics. The victim was found with stab wounds and was taken to hospital in a critical condition, before he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Detectives in Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team then launched a murder probe. They are now questioning a man in his 30s on suspicion of murder.

While formal identification has not yet taken place, GMP says officers believe the victim is a man in his 40s from Oldham. Specially-trained officers have informed the man’s family and are working to support them. Initial enquiries suggest that the victim was stabbed after an altercation with a man close to the Light of Bengal restaurant, according to the force.
A man in his 30s was located and detained to be questioned in custody on suspicion of murder - where he remains. A large cordon remains in place on Union Street as 'extensive and thorough enquiries continue at pace'.
Officers say they are working to minimise travel disruption through the town, while ensuring that all possible lines of inquiry are carried out at the scene of the incident.
