A man is fighting for his life in hospital after reportedly attacking himself with a broken bottle during a police "stand-off".
The horrific incident happened after officers received concerns for the welfare of the man in Wrightington Street, Wigan, at about 1am today (Sunday). Residents say they heard the man shouting in distress at the junction with Trafalgar Road in Swinley, just north of Wigan town centre, moments earlier.
“He had the top end of a shattered bottle to his neck,” said Alex Steggals, who lives just yards from the scene.

“The police tried to taser him. They started yelling ‘get back, drop the bottle’. It was terrifying."
Mr Steggals said that during a stand-off with police, he saw the man injure himself. The man then collapsed to the ground and police officers performed CPR on him before an ambulance arrived, Mr Steggals added.
He was detained and taken to hospital where he remains in a 'critical' condition, Greater Manchester Police said. The force said officers have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as part of their handling of the case.
A police cordon was in place at the junction of Wrightington Street, Trafalgar Road and Dicconson Terrace following the incident. Forensic officers were seen working at the scene throughout the night.
When residents woke up on Sunday morning, they found a blue tent in the middle of the street. One said they had been left “shaken” by the incident while another, who witnessed what happened, described it as “horrific”.
Linda Gambles, who lives in Trafalgar Road, said she saw “somebody on a stretcher”.
