A man is understood to have been electrocuted on a railway line after he ran away from police who tried to arrest him, the M.E.N. can reveal.
The man, aged in his 20s, remained in a 'serious but stable condition' in hospital today, police said.
Witnesses at the scene claimed he climbed a bridge off limits to the public at Farnworth railway station in Bolton last night - Wednesday.
The Manchester Evening News understands he came into contact with electric cables or wiring before subsequently falling onto the tracks.
Specialist paramedics and firefighters were called to the railway station on Bridge Street in Farnworth at around 7.30pm.
The man, who hasn't been named, was then taken to hospital for urgent treatment.
North West Ambulance Service said he had 'serious injuries' after he was recovered from the tracks by firefighters.
Earlier, at around 7.10pm, police had been called to a house on nearby Fern Street, Farnworth.
It followed a report to police of a domestic assault.
Officers attended and tried to arrest the man, but the force said the situation escalated and a Taser was used on him after he fought with them.
He went on, however, to run away from the house towards the railway station.
GMP said, in a statement, the Taser's barbs were 'removed', but didn't address who by.
The force has referred itself to its own Professional Standards Branch and police watchdogs the Independent Office for Police Conduct in line with standard procedure, a force spokesman confirmed.
No further details have been revealed.
