Next on my list has a completely different feel - Culloden Battlefield, near Inverness. Every Scot should experience this place at least once in their lives. Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, along with the incredibly moving battlefield, there is an excellent interactive visitor centre where you can learn all about the gruesome pitched battle that took place in 1746.
There’s an immersive surround cinema but, for me, walking across the actual site was by far the most memorable part of this trip.
