A former Married at First Sight Australia star has been left "heartbroken and penniless" after romance scammers tricked her out of £44k. Mishel Karen, 51, starred in the seventh season of the successful show just a couple of years ago and the grandmother has since gone on to create an OnlyFans account. However, she recently revealed that she was a victim of a huge scam that saw her swindled out of a staggering £44k ($77,267 AUD).
She signed up to a trading platform where she was matched with a "broker" who conned her into a fake romance with him, before extorting her for money. As Mishel thought she was transferring money for investments, the scammers were actually just pocketing the cash. She told Daily Mail Australia she felt like a “big dumb dumb” and that she was "heartbroken and penniless" following the scam.
“They must’ve known who I was because all of a sudden they gave me a financial broker that became a love interest,” she said. “It just turned into a romance and he was getting more and more money out of me.” The scam that snared Mishel was said to be very elaborate, with the fraudsters writing fake articles which claimed that several Australian celebrities were signed up to the service. The scammers even went as far as to provide a fake London address for the company and directed Mishel to websites with fake positive reviews, and her "broker lover" said he would fly her out to London.
