Billie Eilish has recalled going through a “dark episode” before writing ‘What Was I Made For?’, her song for the Barbie soundtrack.The song was released back in July as part of the highly anticipated film’s official soundtrack, and has been nominated for Best Original Song at the 2024 Oscars alongside Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and more.Last night (January 4), the song won the Chairman’s Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival, and Eilish spoke of the difficulties she had before writing the song during her acceptance speech.“I would really like to say that this award and any recognition that this song gets, I just want to dedicate to anyone who experiences hopelessness, the feeling of existential dread and feeling like, what’s the point, why am I here and why am I doing this?” Eilish said.“I think we all feel like that occasionally, but I think if somebody like me, with the amount of privilege that I have and the incredible things that I get to do and be and how I have really not wanted to be here … sorry to be dark, damn, but I’ve spent a lot of time feeling that way.”She added: “I just want to say to anyone that feels that way, be patient with yourself and know that it is, I think, worth it all.Eilish went on to discuss how she “was in a dark episode and things didn’t make sense in life” when she was asked to write a song for Barbie. “I just didn’t understand what the point was and why you would keep going.

Olivia Rodrigo has revealed that listening to Lorde‘s ‘Royals’ changed “the trajectory” of her life.Speaking to Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste, Cynthia Erivo and Julia Michaels’ Songwriter Roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rodrigo spoke of the first time she had heard the Lorde song on the radio and went on to explain how it had impacted her so deeply.“I remember hearing that song on the radio at the time… It was one of those ‘pinch me’ moments where you always remember, a snapshot memory, like, ‘Oh my God, what is this?!’ Changes the trajectory of your life,” Rodrigo called to her fellow musicians.“I remember listening to it as I first started writing songs and just being blown away by her lyrics that are just about being a teenager living in the suburbs,” Rodrigo went on to explain. “I just remember never hearing my life be put into a song like that where it just made being young and doing these seemingly unimportant things feel so sacred.”Most recently, the singer-songwriter discussed the inspiration behind some of the “emo” lyrics in her recent songs ‘Lacy’ and ‘All-American Bitch’.Speaking on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Rodrigo gave insight into how she conceived the lyrics for the outro of ‘Lacy’ – “And I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you / Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you.”“Very emo of me, writing that,” Rodrigo told Clarkson, laughing.

As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list.

Margot Robbie’s Barbie exposed all of his “blond fragility” on the big screen in the summer blockbuster that brought the iconic Mattel doll to life, it’s “the man behind the tan” — as memorably Kenoughed by Ryan Gosling — who is having the last laugh in 2023.“I’m Just Ken (Merry Kristmas Barbie)” — a new holiday rendition of his signature number in Greta Gerwig’s box-office smash — dropped from the hunky heavens on Wednesday.The Yuletide twist arrives just five days before Santa will be delivering Barbies and Kens to little girls and boys all around the (snow) globe.The “Kristmas” makeover of “I’m Just Ken” puts a sweeping, Phil Spector-esque spin on the song that was written by “Barbie” music supervisors Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. And the string-laden setting decks the ditty in seasonal splendor as Gosling ever-so-earnestly sings lines such as “Am I not hot when I’m in my feelings?”Clearly still hopelessly devoted to his dream doll — who leaves him behind for the real world at the end of the film — Gosling ends with, “Merry Kristmas, Barbie / Wherever you are.”The “I’m Just Ken” revamp comes ringing in with a video of the song featuring Ronson and Wyatt.
