Joey Essex left Love Island viewers shocked when he entered the villa as the first celebrity bombshell.
The former TOWIE star, 33, is looking to find love in the villa, sharing that he wants to end the series "hand in hand with the love of my life." The reality TV legend - who is the oldest-ever contestant on the show - has previously opened up about how he's struggled in relationships due to trust issues, which he developed following the tragic death of his mother Tina, who tragically took her own life when he was just 10 years old. Opening up about the heartbreaking experience during his Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins stint in 2020, Joey said: "I had to deal with a lot of stuff. My mum committed suicide when I was 10 which was difficult.
It hardened me up a little bit. I can't explain it. "It's made me tougher inside.
I only sort of started being able to talk about it openly, saying the word mum three or four years ago. I know my mum loved me. But it has given me trust issues.
One day she was there one day she was gone." He further explored this in his BBC Three documentary Joey Essex: Grief And Me. Breaking down in tears, he explained: "My mum loved me, but she left me. I just think to myself: If she loved me that much, why would she leave me? "Imagine if I was with someone and I had kids with them and I really did love that person and then she left me.
I wouldn’t know what to do. I’m already thinking we’re gonna break up before we’re together. I’m pushing it away." A year after the documentary, in March 2022, Joey took to Instagram to share a childhood snap of himself lying next to his mother.
The image was accompanied by a caption which read: "It don't get easier, but I do this all for you.
