Los Angeles County Public Health Reports 1,000+ Covid-19 Cases For Third Consecutive Day

Covid cases continued to rise in Los Angeles County on Thursday, albeit more slowly. The raw number of daily cases rose 17% in the past week, to 3,248. That’s roughly half of the 7,458 cases recorded in California on Thursday, even though Los Angeles County’s population accounts for only roughly 25% of the state’s residents.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 10 new deaths from Covid-19, and 2,600 new positive cases.

“The Delta variant is a game-changer,” said Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said on Thursday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed 2,551 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday. According to officials, this is a 20-fold increase in a month, up from 124 new Covid-19 cases reported on June 21. It’s also a 40% increase just over the past 24 hours, when the daily count hit 1,821.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on Monday reported “a significant increase in the number of people hospitalized each day for Covid-19 illness.” There were 528 people with Covid-19 hospitalized as of today; last Monday, there were 372 people hospitalized. That’s a 42% rise in one week.

At 11:59 p.m. Saturday night an order issued Los Angeles County Public Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis went into effect that “requires face masks to be worn by all persons, regardless of vaccination status while in all indoor public settings and businesses.”

Villanueva said in a statement that forcing masks “is not backed by science and contradicts the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.”

Asked on Thursday as he announced an indoor mask order if the county might consider re-implementing other health restrictions — such as capacity limits and physical distancing — L.A. Public Health Officer Muntu Davis said, “Everything is on the table if things continue to get worse.”

Los Angeles County’s alarming spike in Covid cases continued on Saturday, with a second-consecutive 1,000-plus tally of daily infections. The county reported 1,094 new cases of and eight additional deaths.

Los Angeles apparently is in the beginning stages of a new surge of Covid-19 cases, even as more people are gathering for indoor and outdoor activities.
