Lancashire Police said officers were called to Junction 28 Southbound at 1am after a serious incident between a car and a lorry.
It happened between J28 on Leyland Way and J27 Crow Orchard Road in Standish.
Drivers coming into Manchester this morning have been warned to expect delays of up to 30 minutes and queues back to J29 in Lostock
