Lizzo’s relationship status has been a source of endless speculation for years—like, we’ve all listened to the “Jerome” lyrics, right?—but Love, Lizzo is the first time she’s let the world in on her personal life directly. “It was a tough decision because I could have completely left it out of the film and trust me, there's edits where it was done,” Lizzo tells Glamour.
“But it's such a huge part of my life because of the kind of artist I am. I do write songs about him. A lot of my songs are about love and about him, and of course they're about self-love, et cetera, et cetera.
But, you know, this album is a love album.” In the doc, Lizzo first describes the relationship as “complicated” because, “we’re friends with a lot of feelings.” She says, relatable as always, “I didn’t really know what to do with all those feelings, so we were off and on, you know? … It hurt because I loved him. But honestly, I don’t think I was ready for love.” Cut to a scene of the artist on the couch holding a cool rag to her forehead, surrounded by empty wine bottles. “I got drunk and told Myke I can’t do it with him,” she says.
It is a position every human who’s ever dated another human has been in at least once, but it’s also a moment of vulnerability you don’t often see from Lizzo—or anyone outside of your personal inner circle, to be honest.
