Cinderella to embodying Playboy bunny in this year's wildly successful series Pam and Tommy, James is no stranger to the hair and makeup chair. And for all of the hours that she has spent getting glammed (for her role as Anderson, she underwent a daily ) she has come away with a new appreciation for beauty—so much so, that it's become a vital part of her role preparation.“Pamela released a fragrance called Malibu,” James tells Glamour. “There was a day and a night one.
One was pink and one was blue. I used to watch the interview where she was talking about her perfumes and I learned the whole interview verbatim and I would speak it along with her. And then I would also have the perfumes.
So for that, I went in hot and heavy. I was drenching myself in it." This isn't the first time James has used a fragrance to help get in character. “Occasionally I'll use my own perfume if I want to draw more of myself into a character,” she says.
“But, usually it's something different. Downton Abbey, I remember that was the first time I did it, and my character was called Rose. So again, it's quite corny, but I used a really heavy rose smell.” But James insists her fragrance choices are not always so obvious.
“When I did Finalmente L'alba, I was playing an old 1950s movie star and I had a really strong amber, kind of a heady dark smell because she was a bit crazy. It's a really fun thing to do, and again, it's like a ritual. I love these rituals of beauty and fragrance and smells.
