L.A. County Prepares for Red Tier as COVID-19 cases drop

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released new data on Covid-19 on Saturday, reporting 23 new deaths and 700 new positive cases.

From cash-less concessions to advance-purchase of parking, the experience at Dodger Stadium will be decidedly different under guidelines announced by the team today as it prepares to welcome back fans during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Los Angeles County’s Covid-19 case rate continued to fall on Tuesday, putting the region on pace to move into an even less-restrictive tier of the state’s economic-reopening blueprint by early April, which would allow for higher capacity in many sectors, including movie theaters, restaurants, concerts and sports events.

“The R has been creeping up steadily now for the past 3 weeks,” said Dr. Christina Ghaly, the Director of the Department of Health Services for Los Angeles County on Monday. That rate is the calculated rate of Covid-19 transmission in the county.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 56 new deaths resulting from Covid-19, and 521 new positive cases.

For the first time, Los Angeles County officials on Wednesday announced a timeline for students under 18 to be vaccinated. Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said that, while all teachers and school staff in the region are currently eligible for shots, on May 1 all students ages 16 and over will become qualified. On Saturday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released new data, confirming 42 new deaths from Covid-19 and 793 new cases in L.A. County, while noting that daily hospitalizations due to the virus have dropped under 1,000 for the first time since November 23.

Los Angeles County will officially move into the state’s less-restrictive “Red” tier Monday, with the state achieving a milestone of 2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses in hard-hit communities and triggering an easing of requirements for counties to advance in Governor Gavin Newsom’s economic-reopening blueprint.

The Los Angeles County Public Health department confirmed on Thursday the news announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday that movie theaters can open indoors at 25% capacity “with reserved seating only where each group is seated with at least 6 feet of distance in all directions between any other groups.”

Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said the county plans to release its own operating guidelines for restaurants, movie theaters, gyms, outdoor live events and theme park reopenings as the county anticipates moving into the less-restrictive “red” tier of California’s reopening blueprint.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported Friday that in partnership with state and federal health officials, the County has administered over 456,913 doses of COVID-19 vaccines over this past week, which averages to 65,273 doses administered per day.

Los Angeles County on Tuesday qualified for the red tier of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Covid-19 reopening plan. It’s the first time since the governor introduced his Blueprint for a Safer Economy that the state’s largest county has qualified to move out of the most restrictive purple tier and into the red. If LA can maintain its numbers for just more week, a slew of businesses will be able to reopen, including movie theaters — to 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less.

Thanks to decreased case numbers and changes implemented by the state in response to vaccination efforts, Los Angeles County officials said Monday that they are preparing to advance to a less-restrictive tier of the state’s Covid-19 economic reopening blueprint as early as next week.
