L.A. Coronavirus Update: County Tops 900,000 Total Covid-19 Cases, Officials Report Nearly 100,000 New Positive Tests In One Week

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials have issued new guidelines for the reopening of film, music and television production. The new orders allow for shorter quarantine periods but require daily Covid-19 screenings, pre-employment testing and increased use of face coverings.

Another week during the coronavirus pandemic, another grim milestone for Los Angeles County.

TV icon Larry King has died aged 87. The US TV star’s representatives confirmed he died in Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles after receiving treatment for coronavirus.

There was good news and bad news on the LA Covid-19 front on Friday. On the one hand, the key numbers were down virtually across the board. On the other hand, with virus variants worrying officials and the region’s vaccine rollout sputtering, there was concern of another surge.

On Thursday, unverified reports began to spread on social media claiming that Tory Lanez no longer faced charges in the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. A rep for Lanez denied this in a statement to Joe Coscarelli of the New York Times.

Los Angeles county, which has become the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, has reached its grimmest milestone yet as officials confirm more than 1 million total cases of Covid-19.

On Friday afternoon, as the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors met behind closed doors to discuss new, stricter shutdown orders; as Mayor Eric Garcetti and California Governor Governor Gavin Newsom appeared together to try and jumpstart the region’s lagging vaccination efforts; one key reason for the urgency of those efforts became clear.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is reminding County residents that “the most important action for everyone to take to stop the spread of COVID-19 and save lives is to stay home and not mingle with others not in your household.”

Covid-19 outbreaks at workplaces have soared dramatically in recent weeks in response to rising community transmission, Los Angeles County health officials said today, warning that employers need to ensure their workers and customers are protected.

“The very high numbers I will report today are, sadly, not a surprise,” said Los Angeles Public Health Chief Science Officer Dr. Paul Simon on Friday.

“The rate of new cases this month is translating into a disastrous increase in the number of people with severe COVID-19 symptoms being sent to our local hospitals,” said a statement from the Los Angeles County Public Health Department on Wednesday.

On January 30th, Los Angeles County announced it had passed the dark milestone of 10,000 deaths related to Covid-19 in 2020. It was a grim end to a grim year. Now, less than a week later, the county has already passed 11,000 pandemic-related deaths.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Grammy Awards ceremony that was set for Jan. 31 has been postponed because of the coronavirus surge in Los Angeles, Rolling Stone magazine and Variety reported on Tuesday.

The 2021 Grammy Awards has been postponed. The award show will now take place in March after the recent surge in coronavirus cases and deaths, the Recording Academy told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Health officials are warning that Los Angeles County may soon see up to 1,000 coronavirus deaths per week after revealing that as many as one in five residents who are getting tested are turning up positive "Your bubble is not as safe as you think it is," LA Public Health tweeted on Monday.

Los Angeles County hospitals are so overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients that EMS workers were told Monday to ration oxygen, according to reports.  The L.A.

“The anticipated surge from the holiday gatherings has begun,” said Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer on Monday. While the daily 9142 new cases recorded in the region on Monday was less than half of the record highs seen in recent weeks, Ferrer said the low number reflects the closure of many testing sites and a delay caused but the holiday.

Los Angeles County ended 2020 breaking Covid-19 records and brought in the new year doing just the same.

The number of daily new Covid-19 cases in Los Angeles County had been falling for two weeks. From an all-time high of 21,411 on December 16, new cases had settled at between 13,000 and 15,000. While deaths remained punishingly high, there was some hope that a plateau in cases meant that transmission of the virus had slowed. Friday’s data may smash that hope.
