Korean media conglomerate CJ ENM announced that it will co-produce films and television series with Japanese broadcaster Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) for the next three years.
Previously, CJ ENM and TBS Group had signed a business agreement for joint production in 2021, which included scripted and non-scripted shows, films, and animation. The two companies will now bolster this collaboration by producing at least three television series and two films together within the next three years.
The co-produced series will air on TBS television channels, with one series already scheduled for a primetime slot in 2025.
In March 2024, the CJ ENM and TBS jointly hosted a creator workshop program for the first time, inviting around fifty top content creators to exchange creative insights. A second workshop will be held in Japan later this year.
“The two companies have established a cooperative system from years of partnership,” said a CJ ENM representative, about this collaboration. “With CJ ENM navigating the global expansion of K-culture with its unmatched production capabilities and TBS owning attractive IPs, we will mutually produce content that will grasp audiences worldwide.”
Some of TBS’ recent programs include Kamiwaza: The Superhuman Skill Show, which gained traction among young audiences, as well as drama My Family. The broadcaster is home to popular variety formats like Sasuke Ninja Warrior and Takeshi’s Castle.

After 2017’s masterful War of the Planet of the Apes, which completed the trilogy that started with 2011’s Rise and 2014’s Dawn and told the epic story of wise leader Caesar and the apes who created this whole new world, I really thought there was nowhere else to go with this franchise that had itself started so brilliantly in 1968 with the original starring Charlton Heston as an astronaut who lands in this futuristic world dominated by intelligent apes. Many other iterations would come, even a side foray by Tim Burton, but it was that most recent trilogy (the first directed by Rupert Wyatt, the final two by Matt Reeves) that really popped. But being box office successes, 20th Century’s new owner Disney knew there was more to be mined, and they were right.
