A killer was branded the 'tenant' from hell before he murdered the man who tried to evict him. American national Chad Henderson used numerous excuses to avoid paying rent for months and became 'obsessed' with his tenancy rights.
He developed a 'siege mentality' and fortified his flat to defend what he over-dramatically described as a 'home invasion'. Father-of-one Nathan Burton attempted to evict Henderson on April 7, 2021.
The 27-year-old was licensed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) and trained in conflict management. He attended the address in Woodhurst Road to remove Henderson once and for all.
However, after he forced the door and climbed the stairs that were barricaded by a sofa, he was stabbed four times in the chest. Henderson said nothing before he lunged at Mr Burton from over the banister with a hunting knife, reports Birmingham Live.
As he stabbed the young dad, Henderson rhetorically ask: "Why are you here? Why are you doing that? You know you shouldn't be here."
Mr Burton was dragged outside by his colleagues and collapsed, dying in hospital the next day. Now his young daughter asks 'why is daddy in the sky?'. Following two years of legal shenanigans from Henderson, who sacked his lawyers and belligerently refused to attend his own trial at Birmingham Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of murder and rejected his claim of self-defence.
Mr Burton's aunt Paulette Bassan was among devastated family members who provided emotional statements at Henderson's long-awaited sentencing. She said the thing she struggled with most was that the killing simply 'made no sense'.
Henderson came to the UK in July 2020 seeking medical treatment, but became stranded in the country after running out of money and being
