Jem Aswad Senior Music EditorOn the face of it, Grammy-winning R&B singer Leon Bridges and left-field alt-rock Khruangbin, led by guitar wizard Mark Speer, seem a very unlikely combination. But Bridges started pushing the boundaries of the vintage soul sounds of his 2015 debut, “Coming Home,” almost immediately, veering off into more organic, esoteric directions with the two albums he’s released since then — particularly his latest, “Gold-Diggers Sound” — and collaborating with everyone from Kacey Musgraves and John Mayer to Bun B and the Avalanches.
Meanwhile, Khruangbin continued to refine their largely instrumental style of groove-based rock, occasionally adding vocals that, frankly, often feel like an afterthought. Yet the two acts, who first met and began working up songs when they toured together in 2018, had two key things in common: They’re all proud Texans, with Bridges hailing from Fort Worth and the band from Houston, and a taste for musical exploration.

Jem Aswad Senior Music EditorThe “chopped and screwed” sound has become such a staple of hip-hop that most fans probably don’t even wonder where the slowed-down, stop-start sonic approach came from — and thus, the late DJ Screw, a.k.a. Houston native Robert Earl Davis Jr., is one of the truly unsung heroes of the genre.During the 1990s, he developed the revolutionary mixing technique from his Houston home, adding new rhythms to instrumental tracks, slowing them down and bringing in local rappers to freestyle over the tracks.

Emmerdale fans were left baffled over Liam Cavanagh's blunder on Tuesday's episode as he confessed to wife Leyla Harding that he deliberately pushed Meena Jutla. Only recently, Liam pushed Meena off the same bridge that she murdered his daughter Leanna after she shared sick details about killing his child. It came after Meena kidnapped Dawn Taylor in a limo during her Valentine's Day wedding to Billy Fletcher with the evil nurse also leaving Leyla and Harriet Finch for dead after attacking them.

A “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” movie made for 2022 is a low-expectation enterprise. Is it set in Texas? Is there a massacre? How about a chainsaw? Check the boxes, and off you go.
When I think of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, gentrification, social media, and capitalism are not the words that come to mind. However, director David Blue Garcia and screenplay scribe Chris Thomas Delvin decided to bring all of these elements together to create the first entry on my worst of the year list.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film CriticI’m all for bad horror movies with short running times. (It lessens the pain.) And there are classics of horror cinema that are notably compact, like the 1931 “Frankenstein,” with a twisty tumultuous plot that plays out in just 71 minutes, or the original 1974 version of “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” which achieved its slow-burn descent into the abyss in just 83 minutes. But the new, garishly crude, bluntly overlit, what-you-saw-is-what-you-get “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” which in case you’re counting is the eighth “Chainsaw” movie since the original (you‘d need a serious flowchart to diagram where the sequels meet the reboots meet the origin stories meet the what-the-hell-let’s-just-do-this-again whatevers), achieves a running time of 82 minutes only because there simply isn’t much to it.
