A key ally of Alex Salmond is to stand trial over claims he tried to force his way into a flat.
Christopher McEleny - who serves as general secretary of Salmond's Alba Party - is accused of shouting, swearing and acting in an aggressive manner during the alleged incident, in Greenock, Inverclyde
The case against the 36-year-old called for the first time at Greenock Sheriff Court yesterday (FRI).
McEleny - who denies all the allegations - did not appear in court with solicitor Gerry Keenan acting on his behalf.
Prosecutors claim he shouted, swore, repeatedly kicked and banged a door and acted in an aggressive manner towards a man in the town’s Kelly Street.
He is also said to have repeatedly demanded entry to the property in question and threatened to force his way inside.
The charges allege he behaved in a threatening or abusive way, which was likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm, in breach of Section 38(1) of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010.
McEleny, who is also a former SNP group leader within Inverclyde Council, also denies a second charge of malicious mischief.
It’s claimed he caused damage to a door handle by trying to force it open on the day in question - Sunday, September 26, 2021.
McEleny was previously a member of the SNP’s executive body and stood for deputy leader under Nicola Sturgeon.
But he defected to rejoin former First Minister Salmond’s new party in 2021, where he took up the role of general secretary.
He said he left the SNP as he “genuinely believes it’s what’s best for delivering Scotland’s independence”.
He is due to stand trial in June.

Alaska Reid's 2020 EP Big Bunny was an introduction to an artist whose deadpan melancholy sat atop hazy guitars and an '80s Americana interested in highlighting the sleazy side of Los Angeles. The fuzzy production, with which Reid worked alongside PC Music's A.G. Cook, gave a spotlight to Reid - who had previously spent time making country music and playing in various bands - who duly beckoned listeners to come closer and hear the stories she had gathered along the way.

Rogers Waters show in Frankfurt, Germany has been cancelled after the city council described the Pink Floyd musician as “one of the world’s most widely-known antisemites”.The gig was due to be held on May 28 at Festhalle in Frankfurt, a publicly owned venue. However the municipal government announced that the gig would be cancelled over the musician’s views on Israel.According to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the cancellation notice cited Waters’ boycott of Israel – also known as the BDS campaign – talks with Hamas-affiliated media, comparisons of Israel to apartheid South Africa and anti-semitic imagery at shows. It also referenced the sensitivity surrounding the venue, which was used as a detention centre for some 3000 Jewish people before being deported to concentration camps in 1938.Waters has not yet officially commented on the cancellation, but he re-shared a TikTok video of US-Palestinian journalist Ramzy Baroud who defended the musician as an “anti-racist”.“Thanks Ramzy! You tell’em my brother,” Waters said, with three Palestinian flag emojis and a dove.
Fox Nation host Piers Morgan joined Brian Kilmeade to discuss an op-ed in Rolling Stone claiming cancel culture is "good for democracy" on "One Nation with Brian Kilmeade." Ernest Owens wrote in his Rolling Stone commentary that "the voting rights we once thought were protected are under attack," blaming Republican leaders and arguing that cancel culture "has given a voice to the voiceless." Kilmeade criticized this "huge leap" as a "toxic phenomenon." Kilmeade asked the "Piers Morgan Uncensored" host which side of the debate he is on regarding cancel culture. Morgan said the mindset presented by the Rolling Stone op-ed is a "war on our freedom." "Well, it's complete lunacy to say it's good for democracy. It's the complete opposite, it's terrible for democracy.
