‘Jelly’s Last Jam’ Review: Pasadena Playhouse Production Brings a Too-Rarely Revived Classic Jazz Musical Back to Rousing Life

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic It’s been just over one year since the Tonys gave the Pasadena Playhouse an award for regional theater, and that honor looks more justified than ever now that the venue is presenting a much-needed production of “Jelly’s Last Jam.” It feels like they’re re-earning that brass medallion, rather than coasting on it, with a fresh production of writer-director George C. Wolfe’s early ‘90s hit, a show that that helped changed the course of stage musicals and helped set a course for jazz consciousness on Broadway, yet can barely get a revival to save its life.

‘Inside Out 2’ Is 2024’s First Animated Feature Oscar Contender. Will the Academy Feel It for Best Picture Too?

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor The ongoing struggle to elevate animated features to the same level of best-picture recognition as live-action films will undoubtedly resurface by year’s end. This time, the spotlight will be on Pixar‘s highly successful sequel, “Inside Out 2,” a film that could bring joy and success amid a dark cloud hovering around Hollywood studios. With debut director Kelsey Mann taking over from Pete Docter, the second installment follows Riley (Kensington Tallman) during her teenage years.

‘Reefer Madness: The Musical’ Review: Campy or Not, an L.A. Revival of the Weed-Themed Spoof Doesn’t Bogart the Show-Biz Razzle-Dazzle

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic A lot of bong water has passed under the bridge since “Reefer Madness: The Musical” first premiered at the Hudson Theatre on Santa Monica Blvd. in 1998. Like, legalization of the demon weed in most states… plus, about a million more camp musicals that have come down the pike since then, maybe lessening any obvious need to bring back a show satirizing long-bygone pot paranoia.

Crowded House’s Neil Finn on How a Stint With Fleetwood Mac Led to Revitalizing His Own Band: ‘I Realized That We Had a Flag That You Can Follow’

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The void that Crowded House left in the periods of time that the group disbanded a couple of times over the years didn’t exactly get filled in by a lot of other bands with equal facilities for melody, mystery and tightness. Frontman Neil Finn didn’t give up his gift for those things when he was making solo or duo projects in the band’s dormant periods, but something about the Crowded House banner — as well as the constituency of the band itself — lends a focus that leads fans to expect, and get, something so strong.

The Beach Boys and Director Frank Marshall on the Band’s Disney+ Doc: ‘We May Not Have Been Great Surfers, but We Sang About It Really Well’

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic If Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer on most Americans’ calendars, then it makes sense that the real tentpole kicking off tent season for a lot of people is not “Furiosa” or “Garfield” but “The Beach Boys,” a streaming documentary devoted to the least wintery group of all time. The Disney+ film, co-directed by music-doc stalwarts Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, focuses on the first decade and a half, in the 1960s and ’70s, of the career of the rock band that still might rightfully be considered America’s greatest all-time group.
