The Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, was officially handed the honour by the Prince of Wales, 41, during a ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday to recognise her services to broadcasting, journalism and charity. Her proud husband Derek, 55, attended the ceremony to support his wife in a rare public appearance and was visibly moved by the occasion.
Derek’s life dramatically changed after contracting Covid-19 in 2020. He spent 13 months in hospital fighting for his life and was left needing round-the-clock care. During Thursday’s episode of GMB, Kate described what happened behind the scenes at the MBE ceremony to her co-host Ben Shephard.
She said: “Derek burst into tears. “The lovely thing was Prince William said “how’s Derek?” and I said ‘here’s here!’ So we turned and saw and then obviously Derek was very tearful and then spoke about Jake [Derek’s carer] and gave Jake a wave as well. She added: “Prince William said he wanted to go over but he’s not allowed to leave the rug.There’s a very fancy red and gold carpet that he stands on.
“It was lovely at the castle.There were so many people who wanted to shake Derek’s hand and say ‘my father, my husband my brother … what you’ve gone through has given us a lot of hope. “Because they are dealing with things from Covid but also other things like cancer which are difficult. So I think he got a huge amount from it as well, which was very very lovely.” Following her award presentation on Wednesday, Kate posed for a photo with Derek and her proud parents, Gordon and Marilyn Garraway.
