Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper has died aged 56 after a devastating three year battle with Covid-19. He leaves behind his wife, Good Morning Britain host Kate, 56, and their two children, daughter Darcey, 17, and son William, 14. Derek has been in and out of hospital many times over the past few years after he became seriously ill with coronavirus in March 2020.
He was the UK's longest-suffering Covid patient. At the time, TV host Kate Garraway spoke about realising how major his illness was after finding her husband in severe pain and struggling to breathe. Her hubby Derek was feeling unwell with a throbbing head, a numb right hand and difficulty in breathing.
Scared Kate reached out to her Good Morning Britain workmate and confidant Dr Hilary Jones before swiftly calling the ambulance and helping Derek downstairs. When inside the ambulance and breathing through an oxygen mask, Derek uttered some last words to his children before being raced to hospital - and what he asked them was terribly sad. Even while experiencing such frightening circumstances, thoughtful Derek addressed his dear children, Darcey and Billy, then 14 and 10 respectively, with tearful words.
Before he was put in an induced coma, he told the kids: "You're the best children anyone could ask for. Look after mum, be good for her." Kate revealed this painful moment as she returned to to Good Morning Britain after Derek got infected with the virus and was hospitalised. After ten weeks and still in a coma in ICU, an emotional Kate confessed her focus had been on their brave children.
