Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper tragically passed away earlier this week after a lengthy battle with long Covid, during which she cared for him every step of the way.
The GMB presenter showed incredible courage and bravery as she stayed by her husband's side since the moment he was first admitted to hospital nearly four years ago.
The former political advisor contracted Covid in the early days of the pandemic in 2020 and suffered various health complications which saw him becoming hospitalised for over a year.
The Mirror reports that he suffered a heart attack in December 2023, prompting Kate to cancel all of her upcoming TV appearances in order to care for him. She revealed in a statement earlier this week that he had sadly passed away.
While caring for Derek, Kate was hit with a number of financial issues, including a £716,000 tax bill when she was forced to close his psychotherapy business.
She had also continued to work on TV and radio while balancing life with her children Darcey, 17, and Billy, 14, and taking care of Derek.
Kate previously spoke about the financial toll of Derek’s illness, describing the “changes” she’d made to her home so that she can better care for her husband.
She told The Sun: “Of course it’s been tough financially. As anyone with a loved one who is seriously ill knows, the costs go through the roof in so many ways. You have to make changes to your home and it affects your ability to work. I had to take long periods off when Derek was first sick, and of course it affects the overall income for the family as he can no longer work.”
On Friday morning, 56-year-old Kate released a statement on social media confirming that her husband of 19 years Derek, also 56, had died.
