Virginia singer-songwriter Kate Bollinger is on a hot streak. After two self-released EPs of dreamy, soul-infused indie-pop miniatures — I Don't Wanna Lose and A word becomes sound in 2019 and 2020 respectively — she hit the road in 2021, supporting the likes of Jeff Tweedy, Faye Webster, and Real Estate on tour.
She also received a surprise writing credit last summer on Donda's title track, which sampled her 2019 song "Candy." Today, she announced her third EP, Look at it in the Light, due out April 22 on Ghostly International, and shared it's lead single, "Who Am I But Someone." It's a chipper cut, easy on the ears with a sneaky art-pop edge. A tender blend of bass, guitar, and Rhodes piano plays beneath Bollinger's vocal as she sings herself down from the edge of an existential crisis.
It comes with a nostalgic visual treatment that draws on art pop, Americana, and argyle. "There have been many times when I’ve been so afraid to uproot my life in some way but just as afraid of what will happen if I don’t," she writes.
"This song is a conversation with myself about avoidance, denial, being afraid of change, and being afraid of stagnating. I shot the video in Los Angeles with Allyson from Pear Juice and a cast and crew of all women (besides our amazing producer Al!).
