Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things had a monster of an expansion, sewing up $1.3 million at just 82 theaters for a no. 10 spot at the weekend box office. American Fiction and The Zone of Interest, from, respectively, Amazon MGM Studios and A24, opened nicely as specialty films with original stories of all kinds are seeing traction with ticket buyers.

EXCLUSIVE: Just before the holiday break, Universal Pictures has found an exciting package under its tree. Sources tell Deadline that the studio has landed rights to the Christmas comedy Naughty, which has Olivia Wilde directing and LuckyChap producing. The package is based on a spec by Cocaine Bear scribe Jimmy Warden, and the auction saw several studios in the mix with Universal ultimately delivering the winning bid.

It follows single mom Mallory, who, in order to gain custody of her son from her awful ex, must find Santa Claus and convince him to testify in her divorce hearing.

After a remarkable run in theaters, Greta Gerwig’s pop culture phenomenon Barbie is making its way to streaming, having set a premiere date on Max of December 15th. The news comes shortly after the Gotham Awards, where Barbie was honored with a Global Icon & Creator tribute, with Gerwig and star Margot Robbie speaking on behalf of the film.

There is no need for anyone to delicately dance around the reactions to “Saltburn.” Director and screenwriter Emerald Fennell is well aware her follow-up to the Oscar-winning “Promising Young Woman” is, for lack of a better phrase, somewhat polarizing. In fact, after speaking with her late last week it’s clear those sorts of passionate reactions (throw this writer into the growing “love it” camp) are exactly what she’s going for.
