‘Judas and The Black Messiah’s Shaka King Reflects On “Bittersweet” Oscar Best Picture Nom

Getting Academy Award nominations is a complicated thing for the makers of “Judas and the Black Messiah”.

They were named two of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” in 2014 and are probably best known for roles in “22 Jump Street,” their Netflix comedy special “On Drugs” and their animated series “Lucas Bros.

While it’s not really a time to take a victory lap at the box office with only 3,1k movie theaters opened out of U.S. and Canada’s 5,8K, five out of the eight Oscar nominated best pictures this past weekend in theatrical release reaped the halo effect of Monday’s noms.

For years, specialty films have counted on an Oscar best picture nomination to provide a major boost at the box office. This time around, analysts are stumped as to how much the top nominees will benefit, considering that the box office has yet to recover from the pandemic.

Nominations were revealed Monday for the 93rd Oscars, the apex so far of a movie awards season that has been impacted by coronavirus with movie theaters shuttered forand the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences forced to move its ceremony to its latest date ever, April 25.

Just a day after winning two Grammys, renowned R&B artist H.E.R. earned her first Oscar nomination. The nom came in recognition of her original song “Fight For You,” which she penned and performed for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Judas and the Black Messiah.

Two months later than usual, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 93rd Oscars. The honorees were revealed by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas in a virtual broadcast which had actually become the norm for The Academy even before the pandemic began a little over a year ago.

Judas and the Black Messiah screenwriters Will Berson, Shaka King, Kenny Lucas and Keith Lucas will be honored with the 2021 Paul Selvin Award during the WGA Awards later this month, the Writers Guild said Wednesday.

The film was named best picture, with star Daniel Kaluuya winning best supporting actor for his portrayal of Black Panther Party deputy chairman Fred Hampton and Dominique Fishback named best supporting actress for her role as Deborah Johnson, Hampton's fiancee and mother of his child.

Angelique Jackson “Judas and the Black Messiah” has been named best film by the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), leading the list of winners at the 12th AAFCA awards with four awards, including accolades for stars Daniel Kaluuya and Dominique Fishback.

African American Film Critics Association has released its annual list of recipients for the 12th AAFCA Awards with Judas and the Black Messiah being named the year’s Best Picture by the world’s largest group of Black film critics. The Fred Hampton-Bill O’Neal drama took home the most awards with a Breakout Director nod for Shaka King as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress wins for Daniel Kaluuya and Dominique Fishback, respectively.

For some time there has been a symbiotic relationship between Hollywood and Washington during award season in the form of publicity and prestige.

Considering that Academy and guild members only had access to screen it immediately before the holidays and the fact it was only widely available on February 12, “Judas and the Black Messiah” has already had a remarkable late awards season run. Star Daniel Kaluuya has been nominated for every major award so far and took home both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor right in time for AMPAS voting.

As a fan of Fred Hampton’s story, the songwriter knew she could make a masterpiece drawing on artists such as Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone and Sly and the Family Stone.
