Jonah Hill to Play Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia in Martin Scorsese Movie for Apple

Martin Scorsese is reportedly on board to direct a new Grateful Dead biopic for Apple TV+, starring Jonah Hill as band leader Jerry Garcia.According to Deadline, Scorsese will also produce the movie, alongside Hill and writers of the screenplay Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski – best known for writing ‘The People v OJ Simpson’.

Martin Scorsese just nabbed his leading man for a film centered on the life of Grateful Dead frontman, the late Jerry Garcia. Jonah Hill will star in "The Irishman" director’s untitled biopic and will also serve as a producer on the film through his Strong Baby production arm, Deadline reported on Thursday.

Apple TV+ with Hill, 37, starring as band leader Jerry Garcia, according to Deadline.Grateful Dead band members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann will executive produce along with Garcia’s daughter, Trixie. Due to the rock group’s heavy involvement, Apple will be able to use the band’s music in the film.The group’s origins go back to 1965 in San Francisco’s Bay Area.

Apple signed a multi-year first-look TV and film deal with Martin Scorsese and his Sikelia Productions banner that will see the legendary director produce and direct for Apple TV+.Apple is already producing Scorsese’s next film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which Paramount will distribute theatrically. Apple will stream the film on its platform following its theatrical release.Scorsese and Hill are repped by WME and LBI Entertainment.
