Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara Join Period Thriller ‘The Island’

EXCLUSIVE: Mario Van Peebles (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) has wrapped production in Montana on Outlaws, a new Western that he wrote, directed and stars in for Quiver. Others joining Van Peebles in major roles include Whoopi Goldberg (Till), Cedric the Entertainer (The Neighborhood), Edward James Olmos (Mayans M.C.), John Carroll Lynch (Big Sky), William Mapother (Son of Monarchs) and M. It often takes star power to get a challenging project made, and Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski has gotten just that for his new drama, “The Island.” THR reports that Academy Award-winner Joaquin Phoenix and two-time Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara are joining the film. The most prominent male actor in the film, Ben Whishaw, will be the only one campaigning for best supporting actor. Mara enters a very stacked lead actress race that includes Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). The universal acclaim for the film adaptation of the popular book could help propel her into the fold, especially given her two prior nominations for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011) and “Carol” (2015).
