EXCLUSIVE: Following the critical acclaim of his Netflix western The Harder They Fall, Jeymes Samuel’s follow-up, The Book of Clarence, has gained momentum with a new producing partner and two major stars to lead the ensemble. Sources tell Deadline that Legendary has acquired the BAFTA Award winner’s next film project with LaKeith Stanfield (Atlanta)and Omar Sy (Lupin) set to star.
The film is an original project that Samuel wrote and will direct, produce and compose. Plot details are being kept under wraps other then it being set during the bible era with Stanfield playing Clarence.
James Lassiter, Shawn Carter and Tendo Nagenda will produce the film. This marks the second time all three will collaborate on a Samuel film, with Lassiter and Carter joining Samuel as a producer on The Harder they Fall, while former Netflix exec Nagenda oversaw the production at the streamer.
Samuel’s voice and tone were on full display with his new take on the western in The Harder They Fall which featured an all-star cast of Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz and Regina King. Samuel earned strong praise when it premiered and the industry became intrigued by what was next up for the multi-hyphenate. Samuel first broke the news in an interview with Deadline that this would likely be his next project and Legendary moved fast to acquire the rights.

Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault are teaming up to star in and produce action-comedy “Seesaw Monster.” Netflix acquired the rights to the book by Kotaro Isaka (the author of “Bullet Train”), with Olivia Milch (“Ocean’s Eight”) attached to adapt the screenplay.While plot details are being kept under wraps, Hathaway and Hayek Pinault will play enemies forced to work together in an action comedy two-hander. Joining the pair on the producing side are Akiva Goldsman and Gregory Lessans for Weed Road Pictures, and “Bullet Train” producers Ryosuke Saegusa and Yuma Terada for CTB Inc.

Back in May, the trades announced that director Jeymes Samuel would be reuniting with his “The Harder They Fall” actor LaKeith Stanfield (“Uncut Gems”) for an original project titled “The Book Of Clarence” Written by Samuel, “Clarence” takes place in the bible-era, 29 AD. Some impressive cinematic influences for the period picture include “Ben Hur,” “The Ten Commandments,” and “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” A great starting point for sure, and the casting is coming together too.

She soon gets her mojo back, however, investigating a complicated murder case with the help of some friends in high places. It’s not necessarily easier being a female producer than a reporter in Japan, said Sano. The industry is “10 years behind” in terms of women breaking through in film.
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Paramount’s R-rated thriller “Smile” continues to beat box office expectations in North America and beyond. Over the weekend, the horror movie added $16.3 million at the international box office, boosting its overseas tally to $66.4 million. Globally, “Smile” has grossed $137.5 million, a killer result for a film with a $17 million production budget. It’s an even bigger win when taking into account that “Smile” was originally commissioned for the streaming service Paramount+ and wasn’t intended to play in theaters at all. But positive test screenings encouraged Paramount to give the film a full theatrical rollout. It’s the studio’s latest win following “Top Gun: Maverick,” “The Lost City,” “Scream” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.”
