Chris Willman Music WriterSandbox Entertainment president-CEO Jason Owen, one of Nashville’s top management figures, has signed a deal with Sony Music Entertainment’s Premium Content Division to produce long-form film, television and digital projects, with the “definitive” June Carter Cash documentary among the first of their collaborations to be announced.The companies say that over a period of years they plan to develop “a library of projects that tell the stories of music, history, and culture set in the South” — very familiar stomping ground for Owen, a leading figure in Nashville’s music industry who currently helps guide the careers of Kacey Musgraves, Dan + Shay, Little Big Town, Faith Hill and Kelsea Ballerini. The June Carter Cash doc will combine interviews with family members with archival footage culled from “unprecedented access to the Cash estate,” much of it, of course, related to her husband Johnny Cash or her lineage before that as part of the 20th century’s first family of country music.

Remember the glory days of “RGB” (total domestic gross: $14 million), “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” ($22.8 million), “Three Identical Strangers” ($12 million), “They Shall Not Grow Old” ($18 million), and “Apollo 11” ($9 million)?I’m not saying that Lisa Hurwitz’s “The Automat,” had it been released in those now possibly vanquished days, could have joined the commercial company of those films (though maybe it could have). But when I caught this marvelous documentary at Film Forum in New York, the audience for it was ecstatic.

Few actors have had as varied of a career as Jeff Goldblum with the same level of praise as the 69-year-old actor. After making his film debut in 1974 with a part in Death Wish, Jeff starred in a number of blockbusters throughout the next few decades including beloved sci-fi thrillers like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Fly, Jurassic Park, and Independence Day. He’s also had huge roles in a ton of genres like The Big Chill, Vibes, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.  While continuing to be a huge actor, Jeff has also put his other talents to good use, performing with a jazz band called The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra over the years. The band put out their first album in 2018.
