‘Pain Hustlers’ Review: Emily Blunt and Chris Evans Say ‘Yes’ to Drugs in Taxing Satire of Opioid Slingers

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Early in his career, comedian Kumail Nanjiani did a bit about a new drug called “cheese,” which, if you break down the ingredients, turns out to be Tylenol PM mixed with heroin. “So really, it’s heroin,” he joked. “Heroin’s doing the heavy lifting.” That line was going through my mind as I watched “Pain Hustlers,” a garish and, yes, mostly painful Big Pharma satire from director David Yates, who (“The Legend of Tarzan” aside) spent the last 15 years making increasingly convoluted Harry Potter movies.

‘Pain Hustlers’ Review: Emily Blunt And Chris Evans In Chilling Movie That Explores The Dark Side Of Pharma Grifters – Toronto Film Festival

Netflix’s Pain Hustlers is a largely fictionalized tale of a very real world, and rather eye-opening, business: selling an easy fix for what ails us, even if it leads to addiction and death. Although the names have been changed, the characters invented although inspired for some by actual cases and people, the original source material is all too real. Based on a New York Times article of the same name by Evan Hughes and then developed as Hughes was turning his research into the book, “The Hard Sell: Crime And Punishment At An Opioid Start-Up”, screenwriter Wells Tower has fashioned a riveting, if disturbing scenario brought to life by director David Yates who was looking for a less fantastical tale to tell other than the Harry Potter movies he was directing. He found it, and also his way into what might be quite a shocking expose of just how far of a grift some in big pharma business and the medical community may go in order to make a buck at the expense of our own well being and health. It has its World Premiere tonight at the Toronto Film Festival.

Brent Lang Executive Editor With “Pain Hustlers,” David Yates was ready to exchange Hogwarts for strip-mall medical offices. It was time for the British director behind many of the Harry Potter films and the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” series to leave magic behind for a grittier look at muggledom. “Having spent such a long time making films about wizards, I wanted to do a film in the real world and a social-issue driven, but one that wasn’t too earnest and serious,” Yates says a week before the Netflix release debuts at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.

Marvel Shows Shift Premiere Dates Due To Strikes & New Disney+ Strategy

Similar to how Disney changed up the feature release schedule due to the strikes, it’s doing the same with Marvel series. However, it’s a little more than that as the Kevin Feige-run studio is looking to make the best product possible after fans thumbed their noses at various projects including Secret Invasion, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Eternals to name a few. In addition, Disney+ is making less product, so the studio is spacing out its event programming.
