An Iowa lawmaker has introduced a pair of bills that would insert sweeping religious exemptions into the state’s civil rights law, effectively undermining every existing protection currently enjoyed by the Hawkeye State’s LGBTQ residents.
Sen. Dennis Guth (R-Klemme) introduced the bills, one of which would allow individuals to cite their religious beliefs in denying housing, medical care, counseling, and employment to LGBTQ individuals.

Republicans on an Iowa House panel Monday advanced an anti-LGBTQ bill that is so extreme it would require teachers to notify parents if they plan on even mentioning Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, because he is gay. The bill, sponsored by 13 Republican lawmakers, would force educators to allow parents to opt-out of any instruction that relates to sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Iowa Democratic Party released partial results of its kickoff presidential caucus after a daylong delay late Tuesday showing former Midwestern Mayor Pete Buttigieg and progressive Vermont Sen.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders held a lead in the Iowa caucus results, with about 62% of precincts reported late on Tuesday afternoon.
