Nick Vivarelli International CorrespondentAlec Baldwin will be going back to work as an actor in Italy after the fatal “Rust” accident last October, according to two Italian production companies.Italy’s Minerva Pictures and Andrea Iervolino and Monica Bacardi’s ILBE have revealed that both Alec Baldwin and his brother Daniel Baldwin have been cast in two films they are jointly producing, and which will soon shoot in Rome.Minerva chief Gianluca Curti said Baldwin will be arriving in Rome on Saturday. Daniel Baldwin is already in the Italian capital.Baldwin’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.Both pics are by Italian helmer Francesco Cinquemani, who directed William Baldwin in the 2021 live-action/animation family comedy “The Christmas Witch,” which Minerva and ILBE also jointly produced.

The film, which premiered in competition on the Lido last September, “asks, with brutal austerity, what happens to the soul of a man — and a nation — at war,” as critic Jessica Kiang put it in her Variety review.The Rome event, introduced by Venice Biennale president Roberto Cicutto, is being followed by other screenings of “Reflection,” organized by the fest in Italy.

Nick Vivarelli International CorrespondentThe Russian invasion of Ukraine is reverberating in the classical music world, where star conductor Valery Gergiev, who has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is being forced to cancel engagements at La Scala in Italy as well as Carnegie Hall and other venues in the U.S.Gergiev, known to be an old friend and vocal supporter of Putin, last conducted Tchaikovsky’s opera “The Queen of Spades” on Wednesday evening at Milan’s famed La Scala opera house, where he was lightly booed, according to Italian press reports.On Thursday, as Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala, who is the president of La Scala, publicly urged Gergiev to condemn Russia’s invasion, saying that if the conductor — who has not commented Putin’s move — did not issue a statement, “the collaboration will be over,” he said. Gergiev is next scheduled to appear at La Scala on March 5.
