For a filmmaker that makes surreal, weird, nightmarish films, David Lynch’s “Inland Empire” (2006) is one of his strangest efforts. Shot without a script, Lynch handing out pages of dialogue to the actors each day, “Inland Empire” is also freakier because of its aesthetic look: it was Lynch first feature to be completely shot in digital video.
And we’re talking hand-held Sony DSR-PD150 shot by Lynch himself, grainy as hell and incredibly unsettling. Continue reading ‘Inland Empire’ Restoration Trailer: David Lynch’s Surreal DV Nightmare Comes Back To Theaters In April at The Playlist.
.Not a great week so far for Cannes prognosticators. Or so it seems.
As very recently mentioned, spring is in the air, cinephiles seem to be drunk with anticipation about the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, and perhaps with good reason. A new David Lynch film has been rumored and all but confirmed this week after Variety said two sources confirmed the rumor with them and another journalist had teased it on Twitter (and then was reportedly scolded for doing so).
Falling somewhere in between totally make-believe, fairytale project that doesn’t exist and perhaps now the worst kept secret in Hollywood—at least in the last week (though even this is an exaggerated joke)—it appears that the long-rumored David Lynch project is real, done and probably debuting at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The Cannes lineup announcement is this Thursday, April 14 (super early, 4am ET), and in a very recent Cannes prediction piece, Variety comes closer than anyone so far to confirming the project exists.
Elsa Keslassy International CorrespondentAs the Cannes Film Festival will announce its Official Selection on Thursday, Variety is starting to get a slightly clearer picture of what 75th edition will look like, though fewer titles than usual have leaked. Led by Cannes’ artistic director and general delegate Thierry Fremaux, the selection committee has been flooded with late submissions and is now in the thick of deliberations. Most surprisingly, according to two well-informed sources, there will even be a David Lynch feature film which has been completely off the radar and stars Laura Dern — either as a cameo or a supporting role — along with some other Lynch regulars. We already know the sun-dappled celebration will land several high-profile films from U.S.
Viva Maestro, a documentary starring the charismatic music and artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel, opened on a high note taking in $14,310 on two screens — Film Forum/NYC and The Landmark/LA. That’s a PTA of $7,155 for the film directed by Ted Braun (Darfur Now, Betting on Zero) and presented by Greenwich Entertainment and Participant Media. It expands to 40+ theaters next weekend.

(UPDATED with Will Smith statement) With their options rather limited, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors have just decided that Will Smith will not be able to attend the Oscars for 10 years for slapping Chris Rock on-stage at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27.
“possible sanctions” against the actor — who will, as it turns out, be allowed to keep his trophy. In a subsequent statement released Friday afternoon, the Board stated it has “decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”The virtual meeting was “contentious,” sources told Deadline. In the official statement, Board President David Rubin described Smith’s behavior as “unacceptable and harmful.” He also admitted that the Academy did not “adequately address the situation” during the live telecast.Rubin continued: “We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr.
Arguably one of the more overlooked performances in the oeuvre of Denzel Washington, 1991s “Mississippi Masala,” also starring Sarita Choudhury, marks the second feature film of director Mira Nair. Setting a tender interracial love story against the backdrop of fragile race relations in rural Mississippi, the film, based on a screenplay by Sooni Taraporevala, caresses ideas of heritage, identity, and racial politics into its fold, pondering them with the gentle humanity with which the film is imbued.
“The Bubble” is not based on the challenging production of “Jurassic World: Dominion” – even though his movie is about a group of actors coming together to make a sequel to a blockbuster franchise about dinosaur-like beasts in London. “It really isn’t based on it at all, other than it seemed fun to do comedic dinosaurs,” Apatow told TheWrap in a recent interview. And yet, when he showed “Jurassic World: Dominion” star Laura Dern his comedy he was relieved that she found it funny.
