Industry Pays Tribute to Canceled Cannes as Palais Serves as Coronavirus Shelter

David Guetta just brought New York City's largest dance party from the Top of the Rock directly into fans' homes through his #UnitedAtHomeNYC livestream. In an a collaborative effort with Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray, the French DJ spun from the top of 30 Rockefeller Center to help raise money for the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City and other COVID-19 relief charities.

Despite growing concerns about the global pandemic, an industry that’s still in lockdown, and festivals being canceled left and right, the 2020 edition of the Telluride Film Festival will still go on as planned over Labor Day weekend.

What cinephiles have missed most this spring are the cries of “hon hon hon!” — the bitchy sound of French laughter — bellowing from the Côte d’Azur.

Perhaps even more important than actually screening your film at the Cannes Film Festival (which is a great honor and pretty damn important itself) is the badge given to filmmakers to add to marketing materials calling your feature an “Official Cannes Selection.” Well, the French film festival understands this and is planning on unveiling its 2020 selections in a week. The show must go on — but not in Cannes, France. At least not this year. As has occurred only a few times in its history, this year's Cannes Film Festival — which would have been its 73rd — was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival, unsurprisingly, will not go ahead in physical form, so reports Variety. This year’s festival, the 73rd edition, in the south of France was set to start this very week on 12th May but now will allow its films to be showcased at other festivals around the world later in the year.
