A candidate in next week’s local elections has admitted being cautioned by police after videos emerged of him scratching a man’s car after a road rage confrontation. According to a statement issued by political party Farnworth and Kearsley First, Mark Bailey, who is their candidate for Farnworth North in the May 2 local elections, ‘keyed’ the car of his victim on several occasions. He was ordered by police to pay £2,328 to repair the damage and was given a conditional caution.
Mr Bailey – who works in education, is a volunteer litter picker and also helps distribute food to underprivileged youngsters in the region – previously claimed on his campaign literature that he is the right person to ‘tackle anti-social behaviour’ in Farnworth North.
But he said his actions in damaging the vehicle were ‘idiotic’ and that he ‘wholeheartedly regrets and sincerely apologises’ for his lapse. Video clips from a doorbell camera of Mr Bailey allegedly scratching the vehicle have emerged on various social media sites since his nomination for election was confirmed earlier this month.
In response to this, the Farnworth and Kearsley First issued a statement which gave details of the incident, which happened in late 2022. The statement said: “The man and Mark were involved in a road disagreement.
“Mark was cycling home from work, and the man was driving his car. A heated exchange of views reportedly followed in which Mark was allegedly beaten to the ground.
“The police were called, but due to it being one word against the other, no action was taken. Mark was devastated with the lack of outcome. The incident left Mark suffering with depression and anxiety.
“Regretfully and out of character, while poorly, Mark caused damage to the car.” The
