Hayley Lees' weight gain was fuelled by emotional struggles, she says, including blaming herself for an ectopic pregnancy. At her heaviest, she weighed 20st and wore a size 22, indulging in nightly takeaways and family-sized bags of crisps while neglecting exercise.
Motivated by a desire for a baby, Hayley, 31, opted for a gastric sleeve - where a large part of the stomach is removed to facilitate weight loss - through the NHS in July 2023.

Despite regretting it at first she now says it is the “best thing” she has done. In just 12 months, Hayley has dropped to 10st 13lbs and is a size 10. She now has a restrictive diet and finds herself only able to eat starter sized portions due to her smaller stomach, reports Examiner Live.
Throughout this journey, her husband, Adam, 39, a production manager, has remained a constant source of support, Hayley says. However, he has also faced the shocking challenge of strangers wrongly assuming he controls Hayley's food portions at restaurants. This arises from her preference for ordering starters, which she often struggles to finish.
Hayley, who works in contract support and lives near Halifax said: “My husband struggles because people think he is controlling me and telling me what I can and can’t eat. People stare at you. When I go out to eat it's the waiters - they look at you funny. In Greece - they said in Greek 'I think she is getting abused'.
